Why Readers Theatre?
Readers Theatre
表現音読・音読劇とも呼ばれ，音読を柱にしたグループ発表によるパフォーマンスです。オーラル・インタープリテーションを土台に，書かれた文章なら，ほぼどのような形式でも台本として用いられます。いつでもどこでも可能なため全国の大学・高校・中学などの外国語教育に応用されることが増えています。
It is a group performance activity based on expressive oral reading, often called Readers Theatre. Drawing on oral interpretation, almost any written text can serve as a script. Because it is easy to implement in many settings, it is increasingly used in foreign language education at universities, high schools, and junior high schools across Japan.
読解
コミュニケーションとして音読ができるためには，文章を読みその意味やメッセージが真に理解できたかどうかが重要です。つまり音読で読み手の理解度はかなり分かります。教育現場では読解結果の確認のために，翻訳やワークブックを課す場合が多いですが，そこに意味ある音読を加える方法ももあります。
For oral reading to function as real communication, students must genuinely understand the text’s meaning and message. Their level of comprehension becomes clear through how they read aloud. Adding Readers Theatre provides another effective way to confirm students’ grasp of the material.
表現
表現することはコミュニケーションです。どうしたら相手や聴き手に自分の考えや感情を適切に伝えられるのか。実は音声のほかに，表情やジェスチャーそして身体の動きも大いに役立ちます。外国語教室でより正確で効果的な表現練習のためには，発音や抑揚だけでなく，積極的に非言語表現も利用します。
To convey thoughts and feelings effectively, learners benefit not only from voice but also from facial expressions, gestures, and body movement. In the foreign language classroom, incorporating these nonverbal elements leads to more accurate and effective expression practice.
The Institute for Readers Theatre, Japan （IRTJ）は，日本の外国語教育に携わる方々にリーダーズ・シアターを紹介し，普段の授業で応用してもらう目的で活動しています。現在は英語教育と日本語教育の両分野で取り組んでいます。
